Young British Diver, Tom
Daley, has it all wrapped up
As training begins in earnest for the Olympics, the DonJoy team in the UK were delighted
to discover the young British diving team hopefuls had a new “must have”
accessory….
After a few incidents where young divers were suffering from joint inflammation
and tendonitis, it became clear that a protection policy needed to be implemented.
In order to protect these potential Podium divers while their wrist growth
plates are fusing, Kim White, High Performance Manager for British Diving,
explains why it has become compulsory to wear wrist guards.

St. Thomas' Hospital's renowned Haemophilia Centre publishes new
findings on use of cold therapy
Reduced pain and swelling but no adverse effects with CryoCuffTM
treatment of haemarthroses in severe haemophilia.
The latest research published in the May issue of Haemophilia, (Online Early) by
one of the World's leading Haemophilia treatment and research centres, contains
some reassuring findings for users of the PRICE (Protection, Rest, Ice,
Compression and Elevation) regime who recommend the CryoCuffTM as
part of the immediate factor replacement therapy protocol for acute management
of haemophilic bleeding episodes in the home. The research, conducted by Ian
d’Young at the Centre for Haemostasis and Thrombosis at the Haemophilia
Reference Centre at London's St Thomas Hospital, set out to investigate the
safety and usefulness of the CryoCuffTM device in the management of
acute haemarthroses in the home setting.

Brace reduces ankle
injuries in paratroopers
An interesting piece of research has just been published by the US Army Centre
for Health Promotion and Preventative Medicine in the April issue of Aviation,
Space, and Environmental Medicine. The research was conducted over 100,000
parachute jumps through the Aberdeen Proving Ground and Madigan Army Centre.
Taking into account all external factors like wind speed, combat loads and time
of day (night versus day), the study set out to prove the effectiveness of the
use of parachute ankle braces among paratroopers during military parachute
training.

New knee implant
promises longer life
The 3DKnee™ Total Knee System is the result of over a decade of research and is
the first knee implant specifically engineered to accommodate demands in
contact, movement and pressure that occur in the knee joint after total knee
replacement.
The discovery that ACL deficient knee motions are different to the mechanics of
an ACL intact knee led to a decade long quest to accommodate these changes in
total knee design.

Long Awaited Launch of New PCL Post Operative Brace
This summer sees the long awaited launch of an exciting new addition to the
DonJoy Knee Brace collection - the PCL-Fource. It is a
unique product specifically designed to avoid tibial sagging or stress on the
PCL graft post-surgery.
Over 250,000 PCL injuries occur worldwide each year. Many of these are from
traffic accidents. Over 40% result in surgical solutions. The new DonJoy knee
brace is a perfect addition for pre and post surgical support as well as
offering uses for repair and reconstruction work.
Using the latest innovation in post-operative knee care, the PCL-Fource knee
brace adopts DonJoy's patented “Reverse Fource Point hinge technology” which
provides a dampening effect on knee flexes from 45o to 110o.

More Diving - but this time underwater in an Aircast Walker!
Having had miserable weather last winter in Ontario, Canada, Bob and Wanda Russell
were really looking forward to their scuba diving holiday in the Honduras Bay
Islands. However, when Wanda broke her ankle in three places, their holiday was
looking uncertain. Here Bob Russell describes how help came from an unlikely
source…
"We have been scuba diving for about 15 years and had booked a two week
vacation to the Honduras Bay Islands for the last week of January and first
week of February 2008. Just before Christmas, Wanda slipped and fell on the ice
breaking her ankle in three places which required surgery involving a metal
plate and several pins. She was then confined to a wheelchair while wearing her
first plastercast and advanced to crutches with her second.
